In Donna Parker, Special Agent, the second book in the seven-book Donna Parker series by Marcia Martin, the summer is over and it is time for Donna and Ricky to go back to Summerfield Junior High. Once school has begun, Donna and Ricky go their separate ways more often as Ricky pursues her dramatic talents while Donna joins the school newspaper, quickly becoming elected as assistant editor. Soon things take a turn for the mysterious when Donna's long-lost uncle appears in Summerfield; her friend, Tommy Sheridan, thinks he is being spied on; Donna's friends begin to ignore her; and a strange character, Mr Brown, is employed at Summerfield Junior High. Little does Donna realize that an exciting trip to New York City will reunite her with old friends and solve all of the mysteries. ABOUT THE WHITMAN BINDINGS OF DONNA PARKER BOOKS: The first edition of Donna Parker, Special Agent was issued with a highly-detailed wraparound cover illustration of a mysterious intruder by Jon Nielsen. The bindings were hardcover with glossy, laminated boards, and in the early printings, had two-page-spread illustrated end papers. No dust jackets were issued. Some time in the 1960s, the book was reissued with new cover art in the same hardcover, glazed-board bindings. In this reissue edition, the cover art was simplified and updated to a portrait of Donna boarding a train. In the mid-1960s, Whitman started issuing its juvenile line with matte-finish covers, as their early glazed-board covers had proved to be somewhat fragile and easily damaged. In the early 1970s, Whitman changed the size of its juvenile line, reducing the width of its books by one-half inch. The height remained the same, so the change was not noticeable when books were lined up on a shelf. The first-issue Donna Parker, Special Agent books are only found in the full-size glazed-boards binding. The second-issue books can be found in all three of the Whitman binding variations.
