Kayla Dienner lost her older brother to a fire a year ago. She still has a difficult time when she hears the sounds of sirens. Her younger brother Nathan, wants to join the fire department and she tries to persuade him not to join.
When Jamie and Kayla meet, the two hit it off, but both try to avoid getting involved because she needs to get over the fear she has of losing someone she loves and he needs to get over his feelings of guilt.
